Why some people talk about diversity and some about Cultural Competency?
Diversity is a fact of life and society even when we do not see it, experience it, or embrace it. Diversity surrounds us. In my work I talk about Cultural Competence as an acquired ability that allows us to function healthily and effectively within the diversity that surrounds us. Cultural competence, however is not an automatic outcome of diversity.
What exactly is Cultural Competency?
Cultural competence is the ability to function effectively in a culturally diverse environment.
Why should I, or my organization be interested in developing cultural competence?
Cultural competence and leadership allow individuals and organizations to recognize, accept and affirm diverse talent, experiences and perspectives, and thus become more inclusive. INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES allow INFORMATION, SKILLS, and KNOWLEDGE to flow, encourage CREATIVITY, enhance EXCELLENCE and increase PROBLEM SOLVING capacity. Members of INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES are better able to contribute to their full potential and are therefore better suited to fulfill their mission, and achieve their vision.
How is cultural competence developed?
As any other aptitude, cultural competence is a skill that can be learned and developed. Awareness, knowledge, specific and generic, as well as practice generate various levels of proficiency.
What if I am already successful in my personal and professional life?
Just as with any other skill, furthering developing cultural competence leads individuals and organizations to doors/paths that they may not even be aware they existed before. In some cases it will provide the key to opening doors that were known to be there but could not be opened before.
When would I know that I am culturally competent?
Cultural competence is an ongoing and multidimensional process. As our environment is transformed we are forced to acquire new skills, apply new knowledge, and put into place new practices. Basic premises help us cultivate awareness, enhance our knowledge, and develop new skills for our changing environment.
